H O P E ( 4 67 3 ) I N A S L I T T L E A S O N E D AY SURGERY AND RADIATION FOR BREAST CANCER The Upstate Cancer Center is the rst in the region to oer intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is an alternative to postoperative whole breast radiation for early stage breast cancer. IORT can reduce or completely eliminate the need for weeks of follow-up radiation treatments. This means patients can get back to their normal lives, sooner. With IORT, the breast surgeon removes the tumor during the operation, then the radiation oncologist delivers a concentrated dose of radiation to the site. The localized, single treatment means healthy tissue is less impacted by radiation, thus reducing side eects. If you have a patient who may be a candidate for intraoperative radiation therapy, call the Upstate Cancer Center.
