Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders, and welcome to MD News Central Pennsylvania. In this issue, we focus on state-of-the-art surgical techniques at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. These innovative approaches permit patients to remain in the area for high-level care. Although little recognized by the public, the incidence of oropharyngeal cancers has reached epidemic proportions. Fewer still are aware of the link between these cancers and human papillomavirus (HPV). Our cover feature explores this issue as well as how Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has risen to the challenge of HPV-induced oropharyngeal cancer through expert diagnosis and incorporation of the Flex Robotic System. This technology enables far less-invasive treatment than conventional open surgery, speeding recovery and reducing postsurgical pain. We also delve into complex hernia repair. Hershey Medical Center's reputation for performing leading-edge abdominal wall reconstruction procedures that enhance outcomes and reduce the likelihood of recurrence has drawn patients from an area extending from Virginia and West Virginia to New Jersey and New York. Another feature examines the academic medical center's advanced techniques for breast reconstruction. Whether a woman has undergone mastectomy or experienced a traumatic injury, microsurgical flap procedures enhance cosmesis in comparison with silicone or saline implants. In our clinical section on degenerative disease, we talk with researchers who are calling for aggressive action to address Parkinson's disease, which is nearing pandemic proportions. In addition, we review a study that adds fresh perspective to the understanding of the link between traumatic brain injury and dementia risk. This issue provides news about up-and-coming medical devices and the business of medicine as well. I hope you enjoy reading about the remarkable advances in locally available medical care, as well as healthcare news from around the nation.
