IMAGING IS USED to diagnose a variety of conditions, but no
matter the scan, the patient in question wants similar things: to be
comfortable, to get it over with quickly and to do it somewhere
conveniently located. With Mercy-Centerville's new computed
tomography (CT ) scanner, new avenues of imaging open up a
wider world of crisp, clear diagnostic testing right here at home.
KEEPING SCORE
Coronary heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease (CAD), is
the most common type of heart disease in the United States. In CAD,
small calcium deposits — also known as plaque — can build up in the
arteries and narrow them, restricting the flow of blood to your heart.
Nearly half of Americans have at least one of the three major risk
factors for CAD and other forms of heart disease: high cholesterol,
high blood pressure and smoking.
Other risk factors for CAD include:
Diabetes
Family history of heart disease
Obesity
"Calcium scoring, done through a CT scan, is a good
indicator for potential future heart disease," says Matt
Thompson, RT(R)(CT )(MR), Radiology Manager at Mercy-
Centerville. "If you have one or more of those risk factors, talk to
your doctor about this screening. It can detect calcium buildup
A new CT scanner adds calcium scoring testing and low-dose lung screenings to the menu of
services available at Mercy Medical Center-Centerville.
