IMAGING IS USED to diagnose a variety of conditions, but no matter the scan, the patient in question wants similar things: to be comfortable, to get it over with quickly and to do it somewhere conveniently located. With Mercy-Centerville's new computed tomography (CT ) scanner, new avenues of imaging open up a wider world of crisp, clear diagnostic testing right here at home. KEEPING SCORE Coronary heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease (CAD), is the most common type of heart disease in the United States. In CAD, small calcium deposits — also known as plaque — can build up in the arteries and narrow them, restricting the flow of blood to your heart. Nearly half of Americans have at least one of the three major risk factors for CAD and other forms of heart disease: high cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking. Other risk factors for CAD include: Diabetes Family history of heart disease Obesity "Calcium scoring, done through a CT scan, is a good indicator for potential future heart disease," says Matt Thompson, RT(R)(CT )(MR), Radiology Manager at Mercy- Centerville.
