Greetings, and welcome to MD News Central Pennsylvania. In this issue, we spotlight the leading-edge care available locally at Penn State Cancer Institute and Penn State Health St. Joseph Cancer Center — care that extends lives and enhances quality of life. One of our features offers an in-depth view of CAR-T cell therapy, an immunotherapy that is considered one of the most exciting advances in oncology in recent decades. In our region, only Penn State Cancer Institute offers this treatment, which is for certain adults with lymphoma who have exhausted other options. CAR-T cell therapy utilizes Yescarta, produced by Kite Pharma and approved by the FDA in October 2017 as only the second gene therapy available in the U.S. Yescarta modifies patients' own T cells to attack their cancer. Also underscoring Penn State Cancer Institute's com- mitment to advanced, evidence-based care, we spotlight the exercise oncology program, which actively engages patients in their course of treatment. The program leverages the meticulously documented benefits of exercise — including symptom relief and enhanced outcomes — for a wide range of patients. Another feature discusses yttrium-90 selective internal radiation therapy (Y-90 SIRT). In combination with conventional treatments, tissue-sparing Y-90 SIRT can improve outcomes for many patients who have liver cancer. The minimally invasive treatment is available at Penn State Health St. Joseph Cancer Center, sparing area patients the need to travel to large metropolitan facilities. In our clinical section about oncology, we focus on research suggesting exposure to thirdhand smoke may raise the risk of lung cancer. We also review findings that adolescents and young adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia have a survival advantage if they are treated in pediatric cancer centers. Additionally, we offer a trove of statistics about oncology, as well as tips on practice management and news on up-and-coming medical devices. I am excited to share the perspectives of experts at Penn State Cancer Institute and Penn State Health St. Joseph Cancer Center about state-of-the-art treatments available in our region.
