KANSAS CITY | TOPEKA | WICHITA | WWW.FOULSTON.COM PHYSICIANS, DO YOU WANT THAT JUST-RIGHT HARMONY AMONG WORK, FAMILY AND OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES? DO YOU CR AVE THE SERENIT Y THAT COMES WITH E XPENDING THE OPTIMAL AMOUNT OF TIME AND ENERGY ON ALL ARE A S OF LIFE? WELL ... GOOD LUCK. For starters, no one seems to have a clear defi nition of "work time," Shannon Aymes, MD, writes in Medical News Today. "Typical physician duties include patient contact, administra- tive duties, charting, teaching, meetings and community outreach activities," Dr. Aymes notes. "And with the addition of mobile technology, work time can easily creep into life time." While medicine is not the only fi eld with a nebulous distinction between work and everything else, it is diffi cult to imagine many professions in which the distinction is foggier. With the majority of U.S. physicians working well over 40 hours per week, Dr. Aymes adds, "how easy is it to fi t in this elusive 'time outside of medicine'?" Perhaps not very, but younger providers in particular seem determined to give it a shot. A 2017 AMA survey of 200 physicians age 35 or younger found more than nine in 10 consider balancing work, personal and family responsibilities vital. One respondent's lament: "Many older physicians sacrifi ced having a life to be good doctors." Alas, youth may not be served: Far fewer of the millennial physicians surveyed said they had achieved balance than said it was essential. n Barriers to Personal- Professional Balance BY STEVE BARRETT M D N E W S .
