Mid-Penn 05-893 Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders, and welcome to this innovation-focused edition of MD News Mid-Penn. One of our features explores the advantages to patients of MRI-guided fusion biopsy for diagnosis of prostate cancer. This technique, available at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, brings together the benefits of ultrasound technology and MRI to more accurately detect both the presence and aggressiveness of prostate cancer. Another article looks at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's utilization of 3D printing to produce more durable grafts for patients who require craniofacial or other reconstructive surgeries. Further, Hershey Medical Center is engaged in research in bioprinting that is expected to yield additional advances in treatment. We also delve into WellSpan York Hospital's high-volume Structural Heart Program. Diagnostic and interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, advanced practice clinicians and clinical staff marshal state-of-the-art technologies to deliver effective treatment options, which often can be implemented by minimally invasive means. Our clinical section about gastroenterology addresses findings that patients with more than one food allergy may benefit from use of the immunoglobulin e-blocking drug omalizumab in concert with oral immunotherapy. We also discuss a link between GERD and upper aerodigestive tract cancers in older adults. In addition, you will find news about up-and-coming medical devices, healthcare real estate, the business of medicine and medical innovation. Our region is on the leading edge of clinical care and progress in both medical technologies and research. I hope you enjoy reading about those stimulating advances in this issue of MD News.
