CEO Notes
By Anthony C. Ferreri, President & CEO, Staten Island University Hospital
While out in the community, I’ve been asked if Staten Island has a stroke center. With a smile, I say, “Yes, we have a great program.” Staten Island University Hospital has once again earned the Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award — and
for good reason.
The award presenter, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, reports that recent studies indicate patients treated in Get With The Guidelines hospitals receive a higher quality of
care and may experience better outcomes.
If we look at stroke as a “brain attack,” it follows that instant action can save both brain function and life. Following Get With The Guidelines protocol, stroke patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies, including medications such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) that are known to prevent dangerous blood clots. When indicated, cholesterol-reducing drugs are given, and counseling for smoking cessation is provided if needed.
In keeping with the guidelines, Staten Island University Hospital’s stroke staff develops and implements acute and secondary prevention protocols and implements web-based patient-management tools. These are designed for real-time benchmarking and performance tracking.
“We are dedicated to making our care for stroke patients among the best in the country,” said Souhel Najjar, MD, Staten Island University Hospital’s director of neurology. “Earning the Gold Plus award means we are on the right track.”
This provides good reason for every Staten Islander to smile.
