A routine checkup involves measuring pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, and body mass. A pediatrician will determine whether a child needs any annual booster shots, but New York State and St. Lawrence County have basic requirements. Most children receive a large round of vaccines before kindergarten, between ages 4–6, and before seventh grade, at age 11 or 12. For younger kids, these include shots for: • diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP) • polio (IPV/OPV) • measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) There are also immunizations for hepatitis A and hepatitis B for adolescents and younger children, as well as a meningitis vaccine and an optional human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for kids entering junior high or high school.
