Glen Cove Hospital Evolves to Meet Community Needs As part of an ongoing effort to change its model of care to meet the current and future health needs of the community, the North Shore-LIJ Health System is pursuing a major expansion of ambulatory care services at Glen Cove Hospital. “We are committed to maintaining a full-service Emergency Department with expanded capabilities to focus on the needs of seniors, and investing in a range of comprehensive outpatient cancer services, a community health and outreach center, physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation and a range of home-based services geared toward elderly residents struggling with such conditions as diabetes and Alzheimer’s, cardiac and pulmonary diseases,” said Mark Solazzo, North Shore-LIJ’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “This is the right decision to meet the current and future health needs of the community and to preserve jobs,” Mr. Solazzo said. “Staff members at Glen Cove have always been exemplary, and we have assured them that we will work with them individually as we transition Glen Cove for the future.” The hospital will begin to transform in early January 2014, when its orthopedic surgery program will relocate to Syosset Hospital. In addition, Glen Cove’s rehabilitation brain injury unit and psychiatry programs will be relocated to other North Shore-LIJ facilities in early 2014. Glen Cove’s inpatient volume has been dropping for years and changes in the national healthcare landscape will accelerate this decline in admissions. Mr. Solazzo noted that the health system has repositioned its hospitals in the past to ensure future success, as demonstrated in the 1990s when Syosset Hospital was converted into a minimally invasive surgical specialty and vision care hospital with less than 100 beds. “Consumers are demanding a more convenient, affordable way of accessing high-quality healthcare,” Mr. Solazzo said. “As the nation’s healthcare delivery system moves away from traditional, hospital-based services, we’re embracing a new model of care that manages the health and wellness of individuals in a community setting. We are also developing new models of care to address the needs of patients with chronic illness, so they also can be effectively managed in outpatient locations.”
