These amazing devices can make life easier, but only if you know how to get the most out of them. To help ensure you're not feeling outwitted by your iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry, consider the following: Back to basics—For all their advanced capabilities, smartphones require attention to run efficiently. Close unnecessary apps to keep your phone battery from running low, and use a durable case to prevent damage from an accidental drop or spill. Focus on the features—When you get a smartphone, learn how to make the most of its attributes. These may include camera functions, background and lock screens, and options such as three-way calling, ringtones, and visual voicemail. An app a day—For most users, the main draw of a smartphone is the abundance of applications. Apps can do just about anything, from providing games to play with friends to monitoring your finances to helping you keep track of your thoughts. • The Candy Crush Saga game (available on iPhone and Android) offers free entertainment with the option to share progress with friends. • Mint.com, a personal finance website, offers a free app available on most devices to track your spending and manage budget goals. • Download the free Evernote app for taking notes, capturing photos, creating to-do lists, and recording voice reminders that can be accessed on all your devices.
