Give Your Memory A BOOST applicable to older adults, people of all ages should take steps to preserve and improve their memories. "During childhood and teenage years, people should develop healthy memory habits, which include physical activity, good nutrition, lifelong learning, and social relationships," says Jason Kanz, PhD, Neuropsychologist at the Marshfield Clinic. "Moderate exercise is one of the best ways to keep your mind sharp. Cognitive learning and social relationships are also essential to your well-being." TIPS FOR ENHANCED MEMORY • Write things down. Keeping a planner and jotting down password reminders, important dates, and birthdays can be helpful. Just be mindful of identity theft risks and store your planner in a secure location. • Make connections. Creating associations between items—no matter how silly they may seem—helps with recall. Get creative and develop links between the items on your grocery list, and then use your grocery list to create a story or make an acronym using the first letter of each item. • Unplug and recharge. Meditation, prayer, and reflection all help balance your mind. Step away from your computer and turn off your phone for a few minutes of quiet reflection each day.
