Celebrating a Milestone for
Minimally Invasive Services
A year ago, Southside Hospital became one of the first facilities in the world to earn designation as a
Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG).
TO BE CONSIDERED for this high level of distinction given by the
American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, facilities must meet
specific criteria, including having the appropriate technology, trained surgeons,
support staff, and patient education and protocols in place for excellent
outcomes in gynecologic procedures.
"When it comes to gynecologic surgery, Southside Hospital understands
that women deserve the very best care and outcomes," said Gary S. Kasten, DO,
chief of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and obstetrician/gynecologist
at Southside Hospital. "For Southside Hospital to become a designated Center
of Excellence, evaluators analyzed all aspects of minimally invasive gynecologic
surgery at the facility. This process ensured that the hospital met the highest
standards for safety, efficiency and outcomes."
Offering the Best Options for Women
Abnormal menstrual cycles, uterine fibroids and urinary incontinence,
to name a few, can cause pain and discomfort and interrupt daily activities.
Southside Hospital offers a wide variety of minimally invasive procedures
including hysterectomy to treat these conditions and various forms of
gynecologic cancer.
While traditional approaches call for large abdominal incisions, minimally
invasive procedures are performed through significantly smaller access points.
Through small one-to-two-centimeter incisions, tiny cameras and instruments
are introduced into the body. Most gynecologic surgeries can be performed in
this manner. Now, with the addition of the da Vinci® robotic surgical system,
Southside Hospital can offer patients every aspect of minimally invasive
gynecologic surgery available.
Patients can expect to return home relatively quickly following a minimally
invasive procedure, sometimes even on the same day.
"The benefits of choosing minimally invasive surgery include less pain, shorter
hospital stays and a quicker recovery, as well as better cosmetic results," Dr. Kasten
said. "Using a minimally invasive approach means better outcomes for patients."
