303.651.5111 Women, LUHCARES.ORG TAKE HEART! Perhaps you feel heart disease is inevitable. Or maybe you think it's mostly a problem for men. It's not. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death among women, but you can take actions to reduce your risk. THINK HEART, EAT SMART Fad diets are designed to help you lose a large amount of weight in a short amount of time, and they can work in the short term. However, they don't often promote heart health. High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets in particular can increase your risk for heart disease. Follow sustainable meal plans that are balanced and emphasize portion control to maintain a healthy weight. LEARN TO SPOT THE SIGNS Heart attacks are just as deadly for women as for men, but their symptoms may be different. Women are just as likely to have chest pain, but they may also experience: • Jaw, neck, and shoulder pain • Indigestion and nausea • Shortness of breath and excessive fatigue If you think you or someone else is experiencing two or more of these, don't hesitate—call 9-1-1 immediately. RAISE THAT HEART RATE Low-to-moderate exercise for 30 minutes a day can reduce your risk for coronary heart disease by up to 40 percent. Exercise can also: • Improve cholesterol and blood pressure levels • Decrease the risk of stroke by 20 percent • Help you maintain a healthy weight KNOW YOUR NUMBERS The most physically fit women may be at risk for heart disease because it may be a family trait. High blood pressure may be a factor. Check in regularly with your physician or a cardiologist to monitor your heart health. TAKE A BREAK Stress prevents your body and your heart from healing properly. Take 15 minutes to relieve stress when you feel tense. Try deep breathing exercises. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing for a few minutes. A short walk can work wonders. Getting enough sleep can also reduce your stress levels. If you are concerned about your heart health, schedule a consultation with a Milestone Medical Group physician. Call 303.485.3559 or visit luhcares.org and click on "Milestone Medical Group." 3
