O R G 3 SACRED HEART HOSPITAL understands the importance of coping skills and is pleased to announce the upcoming caregiver event featuring Kari Berit, MS, radio show host and speaker on aging and caregiving. Her presentation, "Caregivers: Be Supported, Appreciated, and Energized," will be held Friday, May 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Berit will cover a variety of tips to help new and seasoned caregivers alike. "Part of the problem is people don't look at caregiving as a job," Berit says. "They think, 'Oh, I'm just taking care of Mom,' but there's much more to it than that. This presentation will share a new way to be a caregiver and focus on how the brain can support you, whether you're a professional caregiver or helping to care for a loved one. Using new techniques, participants will see how caregiving can be more joyful and less stressful." IF YOUR JOB requires you to sit behind a desk and face a computer screen all day, you don't have to settle for being stuck. "When working a sedentary grind, take breaks so you can add movement to your day," says Larry Studt, MD, Medical Director of Occupational Health & Medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital. "Try taking the stairs or parking farther away to build more activity into your day. Even if you're not a fan of exercise, any form of activity, such as walking or stretching, counts. On the other hand, if your job is physically demanding, schedule breaks so you can rest and rehydrate with water." Other ways to make the most of every workday: • • Pack•healthy•snacks.•Nosh to nourish and curb temptation for fast food. Bring a piece of peelable fruit, chopped veggies and low-fat dip, or whole-grain crackers and low-fat string cheese to nibble on throughout the day. • • Rethink•your•desk. Take time to set your desk up so you're comfortable and more organized. Consider transitioning to a stand-up desk. • • Drink•up! Bring a tall glass or a BPA-free plastic water bottle to keep filled with water. Remember, frequent bathroom breaks add up to more walking.
