Young Athletes, Serious Injury The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons identifi es several main categories of injury among teenage athletes: • Acute injury. Caused by a sudden trauma, acute injuries often follow hard hits by other players or hard falls. Sprains, strains, bruises and fractures all are acute injuries. • Overuse injury.
