Though in his 40s—several years younger
than most joint replacement patients—Edwin
could no longer ignore the knee pain that was
keeping him from activities he loves.
"He had problems with his knee earlier, due
to a prior sports injury," says Avelita. "Starting in
2013, the pain came back, and in May, it got to
the point he could not put weight on it. That's
when we decided to go to Duke Raleigh."
Under the care of Don O'Malley Jr., MD,
orthopaedic surgeon at Duke Orthopaedics
of Raleigh, Edwin underwent total knee
replacement in July 2013. Edwin made
a full recovery, but the Ocampos found
themselves in Dr. O'Malley's care again just
four months later.
Avelita thought she had pulled a muscle
in her hip while running, but the pain did not
improve after physical therapy.
"I could not walk normally without a
noticeable limp," says Avelita. "I couldn't go up
the stairs without help. My quality of life was
deteriorating."
ACTIVE ONCE AGAIN
After a visit with Dr. O'Malley, Avelita learned
she had dead bone tissue in her hip, due to lack
of blood flow, which required treatment with a
hip replacement in December 2013.
Working with Dr. O'Malley and the staŠ at
Duke Raleigh, Avelita and Edwin were able
to make the best treatment choice for their
active lifestyles.
"Dr. O'Malley and his team gave us
professional, caring service and got us back to
a good level of activity," says Avelita. "We were
given the information we needed to make an
informed decision."
