2 chofsa.org Dear Friends: Welcome to another issue of Forever First, a new chance to share some of the many ways the Children's Hospital of San Antonio brings world-class medical care to the children and families of South-Central Texas and beyond. It is truly a humbling experience to witness healing miracles every day in the lives of the children in our care. Often, a happy ending can be difficult to imagine for panicked parents who've been informed their newborn has a congenital heart condition. Like the Hajda family on pages 4 and 5, they come to us in crisis, worried about their sick baby. It is at those times we fully appreciate the skill and compassion with which our specialists and staff work to replace these families' fears with hope and confidence that all will be better with their children. Matt and Allison Hajda have a wonderful story to share about their son Evan's healing. The care I am describing can only be attributed to the expertise of physicians and clinicians who are leaders in the field of pediatric medicine. On page 5, we highlight a talented pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, Muhammad Mumtaz, MD, who recently joined our team to expand the wealth of services provided to young heart patients. Another exceptional pediatrician, Shahed "Sky" Izaddoost, MD, has a unique way of connecting with her small patients. See page 3. All of this excellent care and more is being provided at the center of an exciting transformation for the Children's Hospital of San Antonio. New patient rooms and treatment areas are being constructed to make the facility ready for future generations of children who need our help. To learn more about the transformation's latest progress, see pages 8 and 9. The physicians and staff at the Children's Hospital of San Antonio are truly grateful for the opportunity to serve families, often at a time of great urgency. As we grow and transform, we remain committed to meeting those moments with the excellence you've come to expect. Thank you for your trust. Always putting children first, Patrick B.
