4. Securing Funding "Getting funding includes documenta- tion," Hefferlin says. "The designer needs to establish the project 's size, cost, value and aesthetics, and grant-givers want to see sustainability and life-cycle costs." Funding from multiple sources may be pieced together to support one project. A sav v y designer looks for creative ways to fund projects, often drawing on the help of a development representative from a government agency, such as the Economic Development Administration. Sometimes, the Funding Comes to You A GOOD SET OF drawings can be an argument in itself. Collegedale, TN, a municipality of just over 8,000, hired Hefferlin + Kronenberg Architects of nearby Chattanooga, TN to design a sustainable town commons. The design includes a performance center, open air and enclosable pavilions to house events such as farmers' markets and fitness classes, and environmentally friendly elements such as cistern irrigation and pervious paving, ground source heat pumps, trees for shade, and ample use of natural lighting (sketches reproduced here). "We prepared a site plan and floor plans and were in the process of developing a 3-D model from which to make renderings," recalls Heidi Hefferlin, AIA, LEED AP, Principal Architect with Hefferlin + Kronenberg Architects. "It was printed in the newspaper. Someone from the U.S. Department of Agriculture saw our drawings and approached the City of Collegedale about funding the project." A Successful Application What makes one grant application stand out from the competition? For Hefferlin, a winning grant is one that marries the local, human ecosystem with a green ethos. "In projects I have dealt with, creating jobs is key," Hefferlin says. " Your project n e e d s to r e pr e s e nt j o b c r e at ion — t h e more t he bet ter. If t he project suppor ts jobs and agr iculture in your region and reduces fossil fuels for driving, these are new, appealing factors that will assist with obtaining grants moving for ward." 5. Documenting Everything Persuasive, detailed documentation may be the key to w inning funding. Visuals make up a key par t of a grant proposal. Site plans, models and renderings may be included. Also, the plan has to meet the grant-giver 's specifications, so it makes sen se to resea rc h t he f u nd i ng sou rces available to find the best matches.
