Giveaway AnnounceMent ▲ accelerating into the future of cancer treatment (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) Look outside the windows of your home. The dirty snow of winter is melting away, soon to be replaced by the blooming trees, chirping birds, and blue skies that signify the arrival of spring. Growth and renewal are all around us in Ogdensburg— including right here at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center. In this issue of Living Well, we'll explore some of the growth underway at the hospital and discuss at-home changes you can make to renew your health. As you see from our cover story, the highly anticipated expansion to our Richard E. Winter Cancer Center will open soon, and our article on page 7 tells how you can help us as we continue to offer technologically advanced cancer services to patients in our community. Also in this issue, we recognize all of our generous donors. We truly appreciate their support! With all the growth underway at Claxton- Hepburn, it's important that we nd the right person to help lead us into the future. Our search for the hospital's next CEO continues, and we'll be sure to update you when the right leader is found. Yours in good health, A WORTHY HOME The Varian Trilogy will reside in a specially built bunker with eight- foot-thick walls, the centerpiece of a $4.7 million expansion of the Cancer Center due to open soon. The 3,000-square-foot addition will feature seven rooms, including a main treatment area. "Enabling cancer patients to receive treatment locally is of the utmost importance to us because traveling great distances causes stress and expense they simply don't need," says Jerry Sheppard, director of the Cancer Center at Claxton-Hepburn. "Our focus has always been to offer the best possible treatments, and that's what this expansion allows us to do." Expanding the Cancer Center isn't the only way Claxton- Hepburn is fighting cancer in The North Country. Providing free cancer screenings to under- and uninsured community members is a key component of Claxton-Hepburn's 2013–2015 Community Service Plan. To read the Plan, visit www.claxtonhepburn.org and select "About us." A Taste of Prevention Did you know cancer prevention has a savory side? What you eat can play a role in reducing your risk of several cancers. Obesity is a risk factor for cancers of the breast (after menopause), colon and rectum, endometrium, esophagus, and kidneys, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR). The organization recommends packing your plate with foods that aid weight management—beans, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Many of those foods contain antioxidants, chemicals that thwart potential cancer-promoting cell damage. The following foods contain antioxidants and are linked with preventing cancer when eaten as part of a diet that includes many types of plant foods, according to the AICR: • apples • blueberries • cranberries • grapes • kale • spinach • tomatoes • winter squash L I V I N G W E L L www.claxtonhepburn.org
