Considering joint replacement surgery? Frankfort Regional Medical Center's preoperative patient education course will let you know what to expect at every step along the way. Screenings That Save "Joint replacement patients do better when they know what to expect," says Dana M. Soucy, MD, board-certifi ed orthopedic surgeon at Frankfort Regional. "To help patients and their families get ready, the preoperative education course familiarizes them with the entire process before, during and after surgery, as well as through rehabilitation." During the course, joint replacement patients meet many of the team members responsible for their care, including preoperative and postopera- tive nurses, case managers, physical therapists, dietitians, and orthopedic surgeons. The course covers the basics of how the procedure is performed, how patients can prepare themselves and their homes before surgery, medications, what to expect while in the hospital and during recovery, and the importance of the rehabilitation process, among other topics. "We created this class to ease pa- tients' minds about the surgical experi- ence," says Christy Marshall, RN, BSN, CNOR, Director of Perioperative Ser vices at Frankfor t Regional. "We want them to feel comfor table with their procedure and to have the best experience possible." To schedule an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon, call Consult-A-Nurse® at 877-FRMC-MD1 (877-376-2631). If you are a current or former smoker between ages 50 and 80 and have smoked the equivalent of at least 30 pack years (calculated by multiplying the number of years you've been a smoker by the number of packs you smoke a day), Frankfort Regional offers a safe, simple test using low-dose computed tomography (CT) to capture detailed images of your lungs. After an initial consultation with a lung specialist, qualifying patients are screened in our fi rst fl oor radiology suite. Results will be interpreted by Sean Owens, MD, one of the hospital's board-certifi ed radiologists. Based on his fi ndings, patients may be referred to a lung specialist for guidance on their next steps. MAKING A DIFFERENCE "Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Kentucky," says James Lee Jackson, MD, FCCP, a pulmonologist with Frankfort Regional. "Low-dose CT scans help us fi nd the disease when it is more likely to respond to treatment. This can reduce the number of lives lost to lung cancer by about 16 percent. No other test does that." For more information about the lung cancer screening program, call Consult-A-Nurse® at 877-FRMC-MD1 (877-376-2631). At Frankfort Regional Medical Center, our new lung cancer screening program helps doctors spot disease early and get patients the help they need. The best way to prevent lung cancer is to stop—or never start— smoking. For help kicking the habit, call Kentucky's Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669) or visit QuitNowKentucky.org.
