"The patients I treat every day are not just people who have been diagnosed with cancer," says Steven Vallance, MD, PhD, FACS, board-certifi ed general, thoracic and vascular surgeon at Frankfort Regional. "These folks are from my own community. They are my neighbors. Our multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists is constantly pushing the envelope and holding ourselves to the highest standard of excellence possible. It's not about how we treat cancer, it's about how we treat people." A national model for community hospital excellence, Frankfort Regional's cancer program was recently granted a three-year accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. As part of the accreditation process, Frankfort Regional's cancer program, along with its staff, underwent rigorous evaluations and performance reviews to ensure the quality and effectiveness of care was exemplary. A WELL-OILED MACHINE "Our coordinated system of cancer care is designed to address every aspect of a patient's clinical and technical needs," Dr. Vallance says. "Because many of us have worked together as a team for years, each physician and staff member, from diagnostic imaging to surgery, medical oncology to radiation oncology, is comfortable picking up the phone and discussing a patient's case right then. There is no 'red tape,' and no patients get lost in the shuffle." In keeping with the program's collaborative, highly effi cient approach to patient care, Frankfort Regional's Tumor Board—comprised of numerous cancer care specialists—also meets on a monthly basis for in- depth review of complex or problematic patient issues. "Having all our multidisciplinary physicians and ancillary staff together in one room helps to streamline the management of a patient's care by allowing us to formulate the best possible treatment plan for the best possible outcome," says Sean Owens, MD, diagnostic and interventional radiologist, Chair of the Tumor Board, and Chair of the Cancer Committee at Frankfort Regional.
