The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the production of e-cigarettes as it does traditional cigarettes, and regulations vary from state to state on whether or not minors can purchase these products. In DeKalb County, 29.5 percent of adults currently smoke, which is much higher than previous rates and much higher than the 16.9 percent average for the state. SPEAK UP If you feel concerned about your child or teen smoking, talk about the risks. Explain that smoking has been linked to heart disease and cancer. Stress that it's OK to say no if a friend offers an e-cigarette. Educating your teen will help him or her think twice before taking that first puff. 1 Kish Hospital Drive DeKalb, IL 60115 kishhealth.org Sending the WRONG MESSAGE? MANY BRANDS OF E-CIGARETTES CLAIM TO BE SAFER THAN REGULAR CIGARETTES. BUT ARE THEY? CLEARING THE AIR Every day in America, 3,900 children younger than age 18 will try their first cigarette, and 950 of those children will start smoking on a regular basis, according to the American Lung Association (ALA). It doesn't take many cigarettes to get hooked either. ALA researchers found that teens had trouble quitting after smoking only 100 cigarettes. Higher tobacco taxes and edu- cation are making a difference. An annual study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found teen smoking levels continue to decline, from 10.6 percent in 2012 to 9.6 percent in 2013.
