MEAL PROVIDED YOUR GUIDE TO CLASSES AND PROGRAMS MIXING MEDS Bad reactions of this type happen more often than you might think. According to a 2007 study published in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, 40 percent of study participants who used both prescriptions and herbal remedies were exposed to one or more potentially harmful herb-drug interactions. Adverse pairings may include: garlic supplements + aspirin ginkgo biloba extract + anticoagulants/antiplatelet agents gingko biloba extract + trazodone- containing antidepressants gingko biloba extract + NSAIDs ginseng + warfarin ginseng + nifedipine kava + benzodiazepines (e.g. Xanax®) prickly pear + diabetes medications St. John's wort + antidepressants In some cases, combining these substances can reduce the effectiveness of the prescribed medicine or exacerbate its side effects. Some combinations can lead to more severe issues, such as internal bleeding, serotonin syndrome, changes in mental status, and even coma. TALK BEFORE YOU TAKE To avoid potential interactions, provide a list of all herbal and dietary supplements you take to your primary care provider and any healthcare professionals who may prescribe you medications. Tell your care provider how much of each supplement you take daily. Before starting a new drug or supplement, ask your provider or pharmacist about any potential adverse interactions it may have with your existing medicines. (NOT SO) COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINES DON'T ALWAYS MIX. YOU MAY TURN TO GRANDMA'S HERBAL CONCOCTION TO NIP A NAGGING SYMPTOM IN THE BUD, BUT BE AWARE THAT ALTERNATIVE REMEDIES AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS CAN SOMETIMES TRIGGER AN ADVERSE REACTION WHEN PAIRED WITH CERTAIN PRESCRIPTION OR OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that about 70 PERCENT of people who use complementary and alternative medicines do not inform their physicians. 70 PERCENT As you look through the magazine, you will find listings of classes and other events.
