A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows a physician to look inside the colon and rectum, the two main parts of the large intestine. This exam helps physicians find and remove any abnormal growths, also known as polyps, which could become colorectal cancer. If you are approaching age 50, you should see your healthcare provider about colorectal cancer screening. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, talk with your provider about getting screened earlier. HRMC's new equipment improves patient safety by helping give the physician a full view of the position of the scope for safe navigation. ScopeGuide also improves patient comfort by helping the physician visualize curves in the colon before the scope encounters them. Because using the scope does not require X-rays, it reduces the possible lifetime exposure to radiation. The new equipment was made possible by a grant from the HRMC Foundation's Mary Ann and H.L. Saylor, Jr. Surgical Endowment Fund. HRMC is grateful to generous donors who help our local hospital deliver excellent care that exceeds expectations.
