from the Publisher H A N K S F O R P I C K I N G up the May–June issue of MD News Greater Boston. Spring, at last, is in the New England air after what seems like the longest winter on record. This issue's cover story takes a look at the work Kindred Healthcare is doing in caring for the very sickest among the patient population. Their post-acute care programs help people with multiple, serious conditions improve function and increase independence, while reassuring partner hospitals that their patients will benefit from structured transitions into the least restrictive settings. We interviewed Robert Klugman, MD, Vice President for Medical Affairs at Kindred Healthcare; Susan Downey, CEO of Kindred Hospital Boston; Jeffrey Kuvin, MD, Medical Director of Cardiology at Kindred Healthcare and Associate Chief of Cardiology at Tufts Medical Center; and Stacey Hodgman, Senior Director of Care Transitions with Kindred Healthcare, to get a sense of just how the continuum of care works. Our special feature takes a look at Steward Centers for Weight Control. It has long been recognized that weight-loss and bariatric surgery programs in a local community setting offer patients significant advantages. Because Steward Health Care is now the largest network of community hospitals in the area, it stands to reason that this is a service line that can benefit from a system-wide approach. Our interviews with surgeons Bruce Bodner, MD, FACS; Adam Glasgow, MD, FACS; and Nicole Pecquex, MD, give insight into what this means for area patients and their referring physicians. Other stories in this issue provide updates about the local medical industry and perspective on healthcare trends from around the nation. A national article examines a Stanford University School of Medicine study addressing the potential to "awaken" ovarian tissue follicles and utilize hormones to stimulate egg development, a procedure that has led to healthy pregnancies among some Japanese women who had been infertile due to primary ovarian insufficiency. I look forward to your feedback, and I encourage you to follow MD News on Facebook and Twitter for between-issue insights.
