TH E S E HONOR S R ECOG N I Z E successful
implementation of a higher standard of care by ensuring
that stroke patients are treated according to nationally
accepted guidelines. To receive the award, each hospital
accomplished 24 consecutive months of 85 percent or
higher adherence to all stroke performance achievement
indicators. These measures include aggressive use
of medications, such as tissue plasminogen activator
(or tPA, a clot-busting drug), antithrombotic and
anticoagulation therapy, cholesterol-reducing drugs, and
smoking cessation counseling. All of these protocols are
aimed at reducing death and disability and improving
the lives of stroke patients.
The 11 North Shore-LIJ hospitals that "got with the
guidelines" are New York State-designated stroke centers,
which means they have multidisciplinary stroke teams
available 24/7 to assess and treat stroke patients.
Timing Is Everything
"With stroke, time lost is brain lost," said Richard
Libman, MD, chair of North Shore-LIJ's stroke task force
and chief of vascular neurology for the health system. "The
Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Quality Achievement
Awards demonstrate that our highly trained physicians
and nurses are committed to providing care that has been
clinically proven to quickly and effi ciently treat stroke
patients and save lives."

Shore University Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Southside

for meeting Gold requirements and adhering to several
additional quality measures. Franklin Hospital received
the Gold Quality Achievement Award.
Furthermore, Forest Hills, Glen Cove, Huntington,
Lenox Hill, North Shore University, Plainview and Staten
Island University hospitals and LIJ Medical Center
have earned places on the Target: Stroke Honor Roll
for improving outcomes for ischemic stroke patients by
achieving door-to-needle (DTN) times of 60 minutes or
less in at least 50 percent of stroke cases for at least one
year. Shorter DTN times improve outcomes by reducing
long-term disability in stroke patients.
