Brea•h Easie People with chronic pulmonary or cardiac concerns can now receive rehabilitative services in their hometown, thanks to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville's Better Breathers program. The Better Breathers program is designed for people recovering from a cardiac event, such as a heart attack, or who have chronic lung disease. The program features four to six weeks of one-on-one support and an ongoing maintenance program provided in conjunction with Tarleton State University. Previously, community members who wanted to participate in cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation had to drive 30 to 45 miles to fi nd the closest program. Although not offi cially rehabilitation, Better Breathers provides components of formalized cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation. "The Better Breathers program helps participants and their families better manage chronic cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases," says Brian Andrews, B.S.R.R.T., R.C.P., director of Cardiopulmonary Services at Texas Health Stephenville. "Everyone is here for the same purpose—to breathe better. In addition to exercise, patients also benefi t from disease education and the ability to share their experiences and frustrations with others who are in the same situation." Brea•h Easie Helping You A physician referral is required for the Better Breathers program. For more information, call 254-965-1516.
