The Right Place, the Best Care R aymond does an hour of cardiovascular exercise each morning and eats fresh fish four times a week. As a relatively healthy man, he was confused when he began having pain in his right side and under his arm. “The symptoms I experienced were atypical and would wake me in the middle of the night,” says Raymond. “After I experienced symptoms for 10 months, my physician sent me for a treadmill test, which I was unable to complete. A follow-up angiogram [an X-ray test that measures blood flow within the heart] at Davis Hospital and Medical Center revealed I had a blockage.” In November 2009, Raymond underwent an angioplasty at Davis Hospital, where cardiologists on the medical staff removed the blockage with a balloon-tipped catheter and placed a stent to restore blood flow. Six months later, after follow-up tests, physicians on the medical staff diagnosed Raymond with a genetic condition that causes heart blockages. As a result, Raymond has now undergone a total of four stenting procedures. “The cardiologists on the medical staff at Davis Hospital have been very helpful in doing everything they can to make my heart better,” says Raymond. “My cholesterol is lower, and I also take a blood thinner and omega-3 fatty acids to help maintain blood flow. We go over my exercise regime and tweak it as needed. Both the surgical and follow-up care I received have saved my life.” MAKING CARE PERSONAL As Raymond continues to maintain his heart health through diet and exercise, he is thankful for the medical care he receives at Davis Hospital. “I’ve lived here for 15 years, and I’ve watched Davis Hospital grow into a true health resource for the community,” Raymond says. “What impresses me most about the hospital is the humanity of the staff.” When Raymond had to make sudden, life-changing decisions, he felt comfortable thanks to the medical staff who took time to talk to him frankly. “So many questions and worries go through your mind when you have heart problems — I was terrified at first,” says Raymond. “The medical staff sat with me, answered my questions and gave me detailed information I could understand. They really strive to go beyond basic medical needs and treat the whole person.” For more information about cardiovascular services at Davis Hospital, visit and select “Heart Care” or call 1-866-431-WELL (9355).
