A Better Balancing Act While falling is often associated with the senior population, it is not an inevitable part of growing older and can affect patients of any age. Loss of balance is a fairly common condition. Estimates suggest one in three adults age 65 and older falls each year and up to 50 percent of the entire population will experience dizziness or balance problems during their lifetime. Common symptoms of balance problems include: • diffi culty standing up aſt er sitting or lying down; • diminished hearing; • dizziness; • having suff ered a stroke or any type of head or neck trauma; • the need for support when walking Th e Causes For most people, balance problems are associated with a breakdown between sensory input, the integration of the sensory input and the motor output. South Jersey Healthcare Balance Center SJH Family & Friends staff members use a number of tests to determine where a patient’s balance problem originates. The results of the test are then sent to a physician who will suggest follow-up based on each patient’s needs. Interventions could include physical therapy and/or specialist consultations. SJH physical therapists are specially trained in helping patients with balance disorders. The results of the testing will be used to better serve the treatment for each patient’s balance disorder. “Worrying about falling doesn’t have to be a way of life,” said Debbie Franceschini, P.T., director of SJH RehabCare Services. “Th e caring team at SJH Balance Center is ready to diagnose and treat balance problems to keep you on your feet.” FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SJH BALANCE CENTER, CALL (800) 632-6807.
