One thing, however, won't: You need to build a relationship with a women's health provider you can trust, and you can find that provider at Claxton-Hepburn. PROTECTING THE HEALTH OF MOTHER AND CHILD Peggy P. Bastien, MD, obstetrician and gynecologist, joined the staff at Claxton-Hepburn in May of this year. In addition to providing a variety of health screenings, Dr. Bastien also oversees mid- to high-risk pregnancies and deliveries. Dr. Bastien started her medical career as a nurse and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Molloy College in Rockville Centre, New York, and then went on to earn her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, Dominica. She then completed residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, followed by an OB/GYN generalist position at Robert Wood University Hospital in Hamilton, New Jersey. "In my practice, I plan to create an atmosphere where women of all ages are comfortable and feel con dent discussing complex clinical issues," Dr. Bastien says. "I want my patients to be assured they are receiving proper counseling from a physician who is knowledgeable of current recommendations." CARE FOR EVERY STAGE OF LIFE "I love getting to know patients and their families and being a resource for them," says Martha Cole, FNP-C, a certi ed nurse practitioner in women's health at Claxton-Hepburn. "I want women of the North Country to know I'm here to listen and make them feel comfortable, no matter what issue they're going through." by Women Care for Women, well Volume 13 Number 3 summer 2014 C l a x t o n - H e p b u r n M e d i c a l C e n t e r living We take your health personally. Exceptional Care… Thanks, Dr. Ogden! Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center would like to thank Andrew Ogden, DO, OB/GYN, for his dedicated care to the women of the North Country. Dr. Ogden retired in May after 22 years of service. to Cancer Care A Palliative and holistic Approach The Richard E. Winter Cancer Center at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center offers holistic services to help mind, body, and spirit cope with cancer treatment. Complementary therapies, such as meditation, yoga, and grief support, share one goal: reducing stress to bolster the body's ability to heal. Cancer can strain patients' physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and finances. It's easy to feel trapped by stress, and when that happens, the immune system weakens and healing is more difficult. The Cancer Center introduced holistic services this winter as an important part of its palliative care philosophy of helping patients overcome the challenges of treatment. "'Palliate' means reducing the effects of a disease or treatment, and we want to palliate any cancer-related symptoms patients experience," says John Gebert, MD, radiation oncologist at the Cancer Center at Claxton-Hepburn. "Often, we do that by using a combination of complementary techniques and medication. The goal is simple—to improve quality of life during life's most dif cult times." A GUIDE ON THE HEALING JOURNEY Wholistic Care Practitioner Kalpana Reddy, RYT, CYT, CMT, MYT, offers free complementary therapies to patients at the Cancer Center on the rst and third Monday of every month. Her services include: • chair yoga • grief support • life coaching • meditation • Reiki (gentle- touch therapy) • Yoga therapy "Holistic techniques nurture and empower patients," says Reddy, who is also in private practice at the Wholistic Care Center in Malone, New York. "For example, meditation helps them discover a peaceful state, and life coaching builds their internal sense of strength. These techniques help patients optimize their healing potential by removing limiting beliefs." POINT-BY-POINT THERAPY Shelby Connelly, LAc, MAc, certi ed acupuncturist at Claxton-Hepburn, offers acupuncture free of charge to cancer patients—non-cancer patients pay a fee—the second and fourth Monday of every month at the Cancer Center. Connelly tailors treatments depending on patients' problems, which may include nausea, fatigue, or pain associated with cancer treatment, as well as migraines, back discomfort, and allergies. During treatments, patients sit in a chair or lie on a massage table for 20–30 minutes with acupuncture needles in place. "Acupuncture is complementary, not alternative, medicine," Connelly says. "A patient doesn't have to choose complementary medicine instead of Western medical therapy—these approaches work beautifully together." Cancer's effects aren't narrow. Healing shouldn't be, either. Knowledge is (palliative) power—the more you know about cancer, the less intimidating it may seem and the more empowered you'll feel.
