PEACE OF MIND FOR MEN WITH PROSTATE CANCER. USLV's Accredited Radiation Center By Tiffany Parnell Surveying Your Way to Physician Retention A ccording to the Healthcare Financial Management Association, experiences during a new physician's first 90 days of employment often predict long-term job satisfaction. By continually measuring job satisfaction and promptly managing concerns, healthcare organizations can increase the likelihood that new hires will become happy team members who want to stay. Recruitment doesn't end once a physician joins the medical team. In many cases, the level of support provided to new hires and their families means the difference between a smooth transition and a rocky one. If an organization doesn't meet a physician's expectations or if a physician doesn't adjust well to the environment and culture, the hospital risks the additional recruit- ing costs and lost revenue that result when a physician leaves. To identify problems before they escalate into crises, the Healthcare Financial Management Association recommends developing a survey process for new physicians. It includes a get-to-know-you survey conducted on the first day of employ- ment and follow-up surveys administered at 30 and 90 days post-hire, as well as periodically after the 90-day mark. Offering a nonthreatening forum for physicians to voice concerns, these surveys give recruiters a glimpse at whether new hires are content with the organization and the orientation process and provide an opportunity to address challenges quickly. Additionally, if physicians are new to the area, consider surveying their spouses six to 12 months after relocation. That sheds light on how well family members are adapting to their new community, which is a significant retention factor. n M D N E W S . CO M n MD NEWS Eastern Pennsylvania/NW New Jersey | 1 5
