Did You Know? This article is part of an ongoing series about the advanced capabilities available through Hamilton Health Care System. among Top 5 Percent in Nation for Clinical Performance Hamilton Medical Center has been named a 2011 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by HealthGrades, the nation’s most trusted source of health care provider information. This prestigious distinction places Hamilton among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance. HealthGrades’ Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, released earlier this year, objectively identifi es those hospitals with the best overall clinical performances across all 26 medical diagnoses and procedures that the organization rates. These top-performing hospitals represent only 5 percent of the nation’s hospitals, and each is designated as a HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence. HealthGrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk- adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications. HealthGrades’ analysis is based on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the years 2007, 2008, and 2009. Using these top-performing hospitals as a benchmark in this year’s HealthGrades study, HealthGrades quantifi es the impact of differences in hospital quality in terms of lives lost and unexpected complications. Hamilton received numerous other distinctions from HealthGrades in 2011 including: • the 2011 HealthGrades Pulmonary Care Excellence Award • ranked Among the Top 10 Percent in the Nation for Overall Pulmonary Care in 2011 • the 2011 HealthGrades Critical Care Excellence Award • ranked Among the Top 5 Percent in the Nation for Critical Care in 2011 • ranked Among the Top 10 Percent in the Nation for GI Medical Treatment in 2011 HealthGrades also recognized the quality of care at Hamilton with their highest 5-Star ratings in the following areas: » Coronary Interventional Procedures in 2011 » Treatment of Heart Attack in 2011 » Treatment of Stroke in 2011 » Overall Pulmonary Services in 2011 » Treatment of Pneumonia in 2011 » Treatment of GI Bleed in 2011 » Treatment of Bowel Obstruction for 2 Years in a Row (2010-2011) » Treatment of Pancreatitis for 3 Years in a Row (2009-2011) » Treatment of Sepsis for 2 Years in a Row (2010-2011) » Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism in 2011 » Overall Critical Care in 2011 » Treatment of Respiratory Failure for 3 Years in a Row (2009-2011) “Quality patient care at Hamilton is not a coincidence,” says Stephen Rohn, MD, Chief Quality Offi cer of Hamilton. “We work very hard to provide the quality care we would want for ourselves and our family members.” As part of the Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, HealthGrades rates each of the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals in 26 procedures and diagnoses, allowing individuals to compare their local hospitals online at healthgrades.com. HealthGrades’ hospital ratings are independently created. No hospital can opt in or opt out of being rated, and no hospital can pay to be rated. Mortality and complication rates are risk adjusted, which takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally.
