AT THE END OF THE DAY…
TAKE A MOMENT FOR YOURSELF AS YOU WRAP UP A BUSY DAY
AND ENJOY THESE POSITIVE THOUGHTS FROM A SACRED HEART
HOSPITAL COLLEAGUE.
BEING ALONE OFTEN
gets a bad rap in our society. The clichés seem to say
it all: Two heads are better than one. The more the merrier. One is the loneliest
number. But the reality is, more people (about 30 percent) live alone now than
at any other time in history.
I've lived alone for a good chunk of my adult life, and I must admit, I don't
mind it at all. People often equate being alone with being lonely, but the two
don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. Heck, I can be in a room filled with people
and still feel lonely.
Whether single or in a relationship, it's crucial to feel comfortable when we're
on our own, spending time with just ourselves. Many people fill every waking moment with a never-ending to-do list,
afraid if they don't have enough on their plate they'll be bored. Others click on the TV the second they walk in their
home, wanting to fill the silence with any kind of noise. When do we ever have the time and the solitude needed to learn
to enjoy our own company? If we don't carve out some alone-time into our hectic schedules, how do we ever become our
own best friend?
Note to self: "What a lovely surprise to finally discover how unlonely being alone can be." (Ellen Burstyn)
