In this issue, our cover story highlights the long- standing work of Sabates Eye Centers, P.C. in Greater Kansas City. Opened more than 40 years ago by Felix Sabates, M.D., the practice has since grown to include 18 physicians — representing every specialty of ophthalmology — 12 locations, and patients from across the nation and around the world. You’ll hear from Nelson Sabates, M.D., FACS, who joined his father’s practice 19 years ago and now serves as its President and CEO, and also learn about the cutting-edge technologies the centers’ physicians use to treat a wide range of diseases affecting the eye. Our national feature this month focuses on recent advances in diagnostic imaging modalities and treatment for cardiovascular disease. Physicians have utilized CT scanning and MRI technology for many years; however, both imaging modalities present challenges. Radiation has long been a concern when performing CT scans on patients, and traditional MRI is loud and has limited space — making patient comfort diffi cult to achieve. New instrumentation for both modalities, however, has drastically changed these fl aws. Flip to page 12 to learn more about these and other strides in medical technology improvement.
