Try to imagine how the practice of medicine will transform in the next 10 to 20 years — it’s not an easy exercise considering that recent health care reform efforts and scientifi c discoveries make even a six-month view into the crystal ball a little cloudy. With the combination of living longer and not staying physically fi t, people are experiencing more chronic diseases and getting serious illnesses like cancer later in life. This leads to higher use of health care resources. All of these factors have signifi cant health and fi nancial ramifi cations, resulting in a health system that is facing signifi cant challenges: + Growing aging population. From 2000 to 2050, the number of people on the planet ages 60 and older will triple from 600 million to 2 billion.10 + Shortage of care providers. By 2025, it is estimated that the United States alone will be short 260,000 registered nurses and at least 124,000 physicians.11 + Increasing prevalence of chronic conditions among children and adults. For example, diabetes for all age groups worldwide is expected to increase from 2.8% in 2000 to 4.4% by 2030.12 diseases, not infectious diseases, will be the leading cause of death globally.13 By 2030, chronic + Fragmented care management. Only 56% of adult chronic condition patients in the United States receive recommended care.14 + Rising health care costs. U.S. health care costs are expected to rise to $4.5 trillion by 2019, up from $2.5 trillion in 2009 and $2.3 trillion in 2008.15 Advances in the science of medicine using technology are leading to new treatments that improve health outcomes and quality of life. The simple fact is that the future of our health care relies on the innovative thought leaders of today who are able to rethink the traditional model of health care and fi nd ways to make alternatives work.
