It's directly linked to your individual, professional, and financial well-being. An identity thief uses the personal data of others illegally for their own financial gain. Keep that info out of the wrong hands by protecting yourself. SAFE AT HOME When they're not needed, keep records with your identifying information on them secure in a safe. That includes your Social Security card, passport, and tax return documents. Shred or destroy items that contain your credit card numbers, account numbers, health insurance info, or other important data before throwing it out. Your mailbox is another possible source of data for identity thieves. Mail important documents at the post office or in a drop box, and empty your mailbox regularly. If you are going to be away from home, put your mail on a vacation hold. Contact your creditors or employers if important documents don't arrive on time. COMPUTER KEYS Use security software and passwords to protect your computers and be on the lookout for scams. There are very few times when it is appropriate to use your Social Security number online. Do not give out your personal information via email or on a website unless you know the company, understand how they will use the information, and started the interaction. Store sensitive documents like digital tax returns on a memory card stored in a safe. Keep passwords private and complex, and avoid using the same password for all purposes. Remove all your personal information from a computer before you retire it. Make sure the Internet connections and the websites you use are secure before entering passwords or other sensitive data. PHONE ALARMS Be wary of any incoming calls or text messages that ask you for personal information—they are most likely phishing scams designed to gather your data for identity thieves.
