Long Island 05-848 UTUMN IS HERE at last, and at MD News Long Island, we spend October honoring National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many area healthcare facilities are celebrating sur- vivors, sponsoring community events and spreading the news about the importance of screenings. Treating prostate cancer faces its own unique set of chal- lenges. According to a study presented at the 2011 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, a surgeon may have to perform well over a thousand robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgeries before gaining full proficiency in the procedure. In other words, experience matters, so this month we turn our spotlight on the pioneering surgeon who developed the revolutionary Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique (SMART) prostatectomy. David B. Samadi, MD, whom many recognize as a contributor to Fox News' Medical A-Team, is Chair of Urology and Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and Professor of Urology at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. Dr. Samadi drew from his extensive skills in open surgical prostatectomy techniques, robotic surgery and oncologic insight to develop the innovative procedure, which he performs in a customized unit at Lenox Hill Hospital. Mark your calendars for upcoming webinars provided by the local legal experts at Martin Clearwater & Bell LLP. On Nov. 17, Greg Reilly, the Head of MCB's Employment & Labor Law Practice Group, will update the audience on recent developments in employment law, including wage and hour laws, wrongful termination, non-compete and non-solicitation litigation, class and collective action, lawsuits, and litigation involving discrimination and workplace harassment, among other employment issues. The course will provide two New York state continuing legal education credits and two HR [Human Resources] Certification Institute credits. You'll find additional details in our Local News section, as well as other events and briefs about what's happening right here in our local medical community.
