Emergency and Trauma Center renovation project. The center, Bergen County's only state designated trauma center, is expanding to offer specialized pods and individualized treat - ment suites, providing care that is patient- and family-focused. HackensackUMC Mountainside Hospital joined the viral phenomenon when em- ployees took the plunge and participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money and awareness for the ALS Association. The event took place Sept. 19 on the lawn across from the Emergency Department. The Ice Bucket Challenge was dedi - cated to Michael Kottas, MD, a physician at HackensackUMC Mountainside Hospital for 34 years and a member of the commu - nity who was recently diagnosed with ALS. HackensackUMC Mountainside will make a donation on behalf of Dr. Kottas to the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Multidisciplinary Care Center at Columbia University. The Ice Bucket Challenge was initi - ated by the Emergency Department staff at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, who called upon the Emergency Department at Mountainside Hospital to take up the chal - lenge. The response was immediate and enthu- siastic. Approximately 30 members of the Emergency Department and emergency medical services participated, along with physicians from the Division of Gastroenterology at HackensackUMC Mountainside. On Sept. 13, more than 1,000 guests gathered at world-famous Yankee Stadium in the Bronx for the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation Annual Recognition Gala. This year's Recognition Gala raised more than $2 million, which will benefit the many programs and initiatives provided by HackensackUMC. ■ Hackensack University Medical Center leaders gathered at Yankee Stadium for the 2014 HackensackUMC Foundation Annual Recognition Gala.
