What Our Team Means for You At the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center, our medical oncologists aren't just here to prescribe medications and treatments to fi ght cancer—they're here for every step of your journey. Left to right: Alka Srivastava, MD; Himani Singh, MD; and Lucille Alston, MD WITH THREE BOARD-CERTIFIED medical oncologists and a registered physician assistant who specializes in medical oncology, you can rest assured you're receiving comprehensive care. While our team of medical oncologists is trained to treat all types of cancers, they're also experienced with treating patients as a whole. "Care of a cancer patient doesn't involve just giving him or her chemotherapy. You have to be an overall primary care physician, as well," says Alka Srivastava, MD, medical oncologist on staff at the Cancer Center. "Every part of the body is affected by cancer, and our medical oncologists have a special interest in helping patients relieve all of their pain and symptoms." Medical oncologists also care for each patient by: • Discussing the progression of his or her disease and how it will affect the type of treatment necessary • Working with the entire Cancer Center team to determine an appropriate treatment plan • Monitoring the patient's progression throughout treatment • Helping him or her maintain or improve quality of life Personalized Care "Our strength is providing individualized treatment to each patient," says Dr. Srivastava. "Each patient's case is reviewed by the radiation and medical oncology team. Instead of using a standard formula, we spend a lot of time getting to know a patient in order to tailor treatments to his or her unique needs." Celebrating 125 years of building trust. The medical oncology team also attends the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology conference to stay up to date with the latest treatments. Additionally, web camera conferences allow instant communication, so we can collaborate with oncologists at other facilities when we encounter particularly challenging cases.
