IN THE NEWS 3 | | | N E W S N O T E S | NEWMAN NAMED TO POWER 100 LIST Kurt Newman, MD, President and CEO, was named to the Washington Business Journal's Power 100 of 2014. The list recognizes the top 100 Washington, DC, area business leaders. TRAUMA CENTER RECEIVES HIGHEST VERIFICATION FROM AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS Children's National Health System has been reverified as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. Children's National is dedicated to providing optimal care for injured children throughout the Washington, DC, region. Working alongside emergency medicine specialists, the Trauma and Burn Surgery team provides a full range of diagnostic services and treatment to meet the needs of acutely ill or injured patients. CHILDREN'S NATIONAL PHYSICIAN SAYS SLEEPING ON SOFAS POSES DANGERS FOR INFANTS Rachel Moon, MD, Associate Chief of the Diana L. and Stephen A. Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Health at Children's National, says that sofas or other soft surfaces are "extremely hazardous sleep surfaces for infants." With their soft surfaces, sofas create an environment that can lead to suffocation for infants, even during a short nap. Dr. Moon and other researchers, including Lauren R. Rechtman, MD, a pediatric resident at Children's National, published the results of their study in the November 2014 issue of the journal Pediatrics. CHILDREN'S NATIONAL RECEIVES ACCREDITATION FROM AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SLEEP MEDICINE Children's National's Sleep Medicine Program has received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) as a sleep disorders center. The sleep center exceeded all standards for professional healthcare as designated by the AASM. Besides patient care and quality assurance, the standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment policies and procedures, and data acquisition. Additionally, the sleep center's goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.
