Meet Your GI Specialist – Dr. Milone A passion for helping people and a desire to find and fix problems led Mark Milone, MD, to a career specializing in what makes your digestive system tick. Do You Really Need An Antibiotic? w w w. h u r o n r e g i o n a l . o r g welloneconnection 3 $25 Test Your Knowledge! "Taking antibiotics when you don't need them can do more harm than good," says Jesse Van Heukelom, MD, board-certified pediatrician with HRMC Physicians Clinic. "Overuse of antibiotics can increase your risk of getting an antibiotic-resistant infection, as well as wipe out good bacteria in the body that protect you from other illnesses." Before requesting antibiotics, keep these guidelines in mind: • Antibiotics will not cure or reduce symptoms of a viral infection, including a cold and influenza. Ask your physician about the best treatment options for your symptoms. • When prescribed antibiotics, take all of the medication, without skipping doses or stopping your medication once you feel better. Do not take antibiotics prescribed for someone else or for another medical condition. • Talk with your healthcare provider about antibiotic resistance, and ask if an antibiotic will really help you feel better sooner. "To prevent getting sick in the first place, wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face," says Dr. Jesse. "Always wash your hands before eating, after coughing or sneezing, and after using the bathroom." To make an appointment with Dr. Jesse, visit www.huronregional.org and click on "Physician Finder." After working as a doctor of internal medicine for 11 years, Dr. Milone decided it was time to narrow the focus of the care he offered his patients. He entered a program of advanced training in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Since 2004, he has been a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist. "In internal medicine, I was a jack-of-all-trades," Dr. Milone says. "I wanted to be the doctor who knew all there was to know about a certain topic. Now, the buck stops here." Here to Help Dr. Milone hosts a monthly specialty clinic on the third Friday of the month at Huron Regional Medical Center, diagnosing and helping correct problems with the entire digestive system – from the esophagus to the colon. Some of the most common conditions he treats include irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, colitis and Crohn's disease. He also performs screenings such as colonoscopies and diagnoses and treats patients with liver disease. "I love knowing that what I do helps people live longer, healthier lives," Dr. Milone says. "Something as simple as removing a polyp can keep someone from having colon cancer down the road." To make an appointment with Dr. Milone, ask your primary care provider for a referral or visit www.huronregional.org and click on "Physician Finder" and then "Specialists" for appointment information.
