South Central Pennsylvania 05-869 W ELCOME TO AN expanded, spe- cial spring issue of MD News South Central Pennsylvania. We focus on the latest technological advances and innovative programs at WellSpan Health, including the shared care plans that are featured in our cover story. Utilizing shared care plans, health coaches help patients set short- and long-term health goals. The plans provide not only background about patients' medical conditions but also information about socioeconomic or other factors that might play a role in patient care. We also examine WellSpan's role in research on innova- tive technologies and techniques for heart patients. These devices and procedures include the Nanostim pacemaker, coronary artery stenting that dissolves over time and a cardiac plug that may be used in place of blood-thinning medications to reduce stroke risk. Currently WellSpan's Heart & Vascular Clinical Trials and Research Program involves hundreds of patients in more than 30 open clinical trials. Genetic counseling at WellSpan is now playing a key role in helping patients understand their risk for cancer. Amanda Matchette, licensed genetic counselor at WellSpan, explains how DNA testing provides patients and their families with critical information they need to manage that risk. Additionally, we take a look at WellSpan's proactive integration of behavioral health into primary care. Through its medical homes, Bridges to Health program and proposed affiliation with Philhaven, WellSpan is streamlining and enhancing patient access to behavioral health services. With three da Vinci Surgical Systems now in use, WellSpan York Hospital continues to expand options for minimally invasive procedures, and robotic surgery education has become a key component of WellSpan's Surgical Residency Program. We'll bring you up to speed on this facet of WellSpan's leading-edge capabilities. From our national desk, we offer thought-provoking articles on topics ranging from strategies for nurturing physician nest eggs to advances in assessing pain in noncommunicative patients. Our special clinical section on senior health examines the implications of a predictive test for Alzheimer's, and we review issues related to home health and long-term care.
