Currently finishing her senior year at Lumberton High School, Kennedy was a freshman softball player in 2010 when she first met with the orthopedic specialists at CHRISTUS Orthopedic Specialty Center and Beaumont Bone & Joint Institute. "She had pain between her thumb and pointer finger while she was batting," says Kim Cline, Kennedy's mom. "It turned out to be a cyst that needed removal." "We removed her cyst, and Kennedy quickly returned to the outfield with her select and high school ball teams," says Robert Kramer, M.D., orthopedic surgeon with CHRISTUS Orthopedic Specialty Center and Beaumont Bone & Joint Institute. "Because we focus on athletic injuries, we can get athletes back to a high level of play safely and quickly." Kennedy was back in 2012 for another problem — this time, with her knees. "We originally saw her for right knee pain," says Gene Paul Isabell Jr., M.D., orthopedic surgeon with CHRISTUS Orthopedic Specialty Center and Beaumont Bone & Joint Institute. "She had a lateral meniscus tear and a condition called plica syndrome, which occurs when the area between the kneecap and femur becomes thick and fibrous." After surgery to remove the thickened areas around her joints, Kennedy returned to play — and was back to see Dr. Isabell for her left knee in 2014. "Her left knee had plica syndrome in addition to chondromalacia," Dr. Isabell says. "Chondromalacia occurs when the cartilage under the kneecap becomes soft and the kneecap becomes inflamed." "As parents, her father and I were in the room through all the appointments, but her surgeons had conversations with her," Kim says. "Kennedy is very mature for her age, and we loved that Kennedy was able to make decisions with her doctors and that they explained to her exactly what was going on." QUALIT Y CARE, RAPID RECOVERY Despite multiple setbacks, Kennedy is still playing ball — and will continue her career next season with a full scholarship to the University of Mississippi, in large part thanks to the support of her orthopedic team. Back in the Game For Kennedy Cline of Lumberton, personalized orthopedic care allowed her to pursue her dream of playing college-level sports. Gene Paul Isabell Jr., M.D. Robert Kramer, M.D. "With our busy lives and sports schedules, injuries are not on the menu," Kim says. "I can't speak highly enough of everyone in the Beaumont office, from the physicians to the staff at the front desk."
