Get to Know Dr. Powell Leslie Powell, M.D., family medicine physician, is a native of Silsbee, Texas. She then traveled to Lake Charles, Louisiana, to perform her residency training before settling in Beaumont five years ago. Finally, we serve as a referral source when patients need to see a specialist. Q. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING A PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN? Dr. Powell: You build a strong relationship with the doctor who treats you when you're sick. Instead of having to turn to an urgent care center, you can see a physician who is familiar with your health history and conditions, allergies and prescribed medications that may affect your treatment. By building a relationship with a primary care physician, you get guidance from someone you trust when medical concerns arise. Having a primary care physician can make a big difference in your overall health. People who see family medicine physicians and receive screenings as recommended typically live more functional, active lives and have a greater quality of life. Q : WHAT T YPES OF PATIENTS DO PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS SEE IN THEIR PRACTICES? Dr. Powell: On a given day, I may treat people ranging from age 16 to more than 100 years old. Some patients only come into the office once a year for annual wellness exams. But older adults with multiple chronic medical conditions may come in for checkups every three to six months. No matter whether you need routine preventive care or chronic disease management, we have the ability to monitor and help protect your health.
