EVERY PART OF your life is different once you're a parent—what you
eat, where your money goes, how you sleep, how you work, and what
you spend your time doing and thinking about.
Discussing these changes and working with your partner to prepare
physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially for pregnancy can
help make the transition easier.
Talk It Through
Try to tackle the tough topics before becoming pregnant. Address any
concerns so you both feel you're on the same page. Topics to talk
about include:
 Career choices
 Childcare
arrangements
 College savings
 Medical expenses
 Parental leave
 Parenting styles
 Support systems
Take Care
"The healthier you are, the easier it will be to get
pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy for you and
baby," says lactation consultant Jennifer Kleckner, RN,
LCCE, maternal child educator at KishHealth System.
"That means reaching a healthy weight if you are
currently underweight or overweight and managing any
existing health conditions such as diabetes."
Women who are trying to get pregnant should also take
400 milligrams of folic acid a day to help ensure their babies'
healthy brain development. They should also have dental work or
any required X-rays done before getting pregnant.
