The gene MCF2L is now the third gene associated with the condition. MCF2L was identified by a genome-wide association scan used by investigators at Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, using information from the 1000 Genomes Project. Researchers identified the MCF2L gene as found on chromosome 13, which regu- lates the nerve growth factor (NGF). The Sanger Institute study involved more than 19,000 individuals with arthritis and 25,000 without the condition. Research revealed that individuals suffering from osteoarthritis in the knee, when treated with an antibody against NGF, experienced lessened pain and improved knee move- ment, suggesting that the MCF2L gene has involvement in osteoarthritis. Researchers are using the results from the study to help improve the biological understanding of the genetic background of the disease. n TIMAGING Reveals Route of Brain Cancer Cells ECHNOLOGY UTILIZING A CRYO-IMAGING tech- nique, researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have revealed technology that can potentially track the routes of individual cancer cells as a tumor spreads in the brain, allowing scientists to see more than ever before. Researchers used the cryo-imaging technology to obtain images of the mouse model of gilo multiforme. The cryo-imaging system transmits a digital, three-dimensional image of the brain, layer by layer. The software and algorithms used by researchers with the technology allows researchers to see individual cells, the tumor mass and blood vessels that are feeding and dispersing cancer cells. The information gathered allows research- ers to see how tumors invade and spread in the brain, which can help in stopping brain cancer as it progresses and assist in evaluat- ing drug therapies for their effectiveness in treating brain cancer. n ADVERTISERS' INDEX Kansas Pathology Consultants P.A. ......
