In this edition, we share exciting research findings and also touch on some troubling trends. Clinical and technological breakthroughs hold enor- mous promise for revolutionizing neurological practice, and we examine some of those advances in the first of our special clinical sections. We talk with researchers who may have developed a more objective means of diagnosing adult depression. We also explore a smartphone app that assesses speech patterns to determine if a patient is about to experience a manic or depressive episode. And we summarize other neurology-related studies. Some of the most encouraging medical advances in recent months have been in the field of women's health, and we delve into the findings in our second special clinical section. We look at breast cancer survivorship, which is on a significant upward trajectory thanks to a drug combination that has changed the standard of care. In addition, we examine a study suggesting that women who request but do not receive a Caesarean section may face greater risk of post-traumatic stress symptoms. And we round up a variety of statistics about women and their health. One of our national features takes a look at the difficulties of gathering outcomes data about medical tourists who undergo untested — and largely unregulated — stem cell treatments. The other considers possible links between pollutants and certain medical conditions among children. In addition to perusing our bimonthly digital edition, I hope you will follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/mdnews and on Twitter @MDNewsNetwork.
