The Affordable Care Act requires healthcare plans to cover the full cost of yearly screening mammograms for women ages 40 and older. Free mammograms are available to anyone who has health insurance through their employer, Medicare or Medicaid, or a enrolled plan. The American Cancer Society recommends women receive a screening mammogram every year beginning at age 40. All mammograms at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center are now performed using 3-D mammography technology, which improves cancer detection and leads to fewer false positives. Other free screenings include those for blood pressure, cholesterol, colorectal cancer, Type 2 diabetes, HIV, obesity, and tobacco use.
