NEOMED recruits doctor of pharmacy students throughout Ohio and educates them in an innovative, interprofessional team model alongside doctor of medicine students. Students graduate with compre- hensive medication management skills and a broad view of patient care. The vast majority of graduates remain in the state, including some who return to their home communities, where they focus on working effectively with other health professionals to provide superior patient care. Medical Mutual's $1 million philan- thropic commitment will fund 14 four-year scholarships for NEOMED doctor of pharmacy students. Each scholarship will provide $18,000 toward annual tuition and fees (approximately 70 percent of the total), and students in good standing will be eligible to receive the scholar- ship for all four years ($72,000) of their pharmacy education. "It's not often that two organizations align so well on community health initiatives," says Jay A. Gershen, DDS, PhD, President of NEOMED. "But this is even better, as we also share a desire for innovative workforce development solu- tions that truly maximize the impact. In addition to developing health professionals from the community, we're also deploying them to return and provide health care for those communities." Education for Service, another one of the University's innovative models, is key to such community-based collabora- tions. In return for substantial financial support, scholarship recipients will be required to work one year for every year of scholarship in an underserved rural or urban community in regions covered by Medical Mutual. "There is nothing out there quite like these models," says Jared Chaney, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and EVP of Corporate Communications, Medical Mutual. "NEOMED combines two models — interprofessional medical training and Education for Service — that are getting national attention, and it's all happening in our backyard." NEOMED will launch the program for the 2015–16 academic year by selecting up to eight Medical Mutual Pharmacy Scholars for the Class of 2019. The remain- ing six will be selected next year for the Class of 2020. Providing they continue to meet all requirements, all 14 will qualify for four-year scholarships. ■ Establish Pharmacy Scholars Program Commitment that Will Fund 14 Four-year Scholarships NEOMED and Medical Mutual of Ohio 2 0 1 5 J U LY/AU G U S T ■ M D N E W S .
