IABETE S IS ONE of the most common diseases in
school-aged children in the United States. In 2012,
approximately 208,000 children and adolescents had
diabetes, according to the CDC. And the numbers for
both groups are increasing. Cydney Fenton, MD, is Director of
Akron Children's Hospital's Center for Diabetes & Endocrinology,
which recorded 10,000 patient visits in 2014.
"Almost half (48 percent) of these visits were related to Type
1 and Type 2 diabetes," Dr. Fenton says. "The rest were related
to endocrine disorders such as short stature, thyroid disease,
metabolism disorders and pubertal disorders."
